Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being crushed due to the unplanned collapse of wooden trusses. a/ At the job site, employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of being crushed due to the unplanned collapse of 54 wooden trusses and two gable trusses. All 56 wooden trusses were temporarily braced with a single, linear row of 2 X 4 lumber and two diagonal rows of 2 X 4 lumber positioned along one chord. One method of abatement to correct this apparent hazard is to install two rows of 2 X 4 lumber along both chords of the trusses and a third row along the peak. Additional diagonal bracing must be positioned along both chords every four trusses or eight feet as required by BCSI-B-1, Summary Sheet. DISCLAIMER: a/ The employer is not limited to the abatement method(s) suggested by OSHA. b/ The employer is responsible for selecting and implementing an effective abatement method. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND ABATEMENT VERIFICATION ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
