Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards while operating a front end loader. Wet Plant, employees while operating a Caterpillar 980G front end wheel bucket loader, ID #2KR02397, to move coal slag material into the Wet System hopper were exposed to struck by hazards. The front end wheel bucket loader had the following defective items: excessive plat/chatter in the front left lifting cylinder; inoperable parking brake; no back up alarm; broken/missing handrails; makeshift seat; various inoperable gauges; and, a broken windshield. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to implement inspection and routine maintenance schedules as stated in the Caterpillar Operations and Maintenance Manual, 980G Wheel Loader. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).s
