Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees exposed to hazards while working at elevated heights retrieving or restocking of store merchandise. Throughout the store employees were using two mobile ladder stand platforms, approximately five feet in height, to obtain and replace merchandise from storage racks. Both ladder stand platforms had inoperable brakes on them. Employees were exposed to falls as the ladder stand platform wheels would not locked in place and the platforms move inadvertently. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow American National Standard Institute (ANSI) ANSI -ASC A14.7 - 2006, American National Standard for Mobile Ladder Stands and Mobile Ladder Stand Platforms, Section, 8.2 Owner's Responsibility. Replace or repair the brakes on the wheels of the ladder stand platforms. ***Abatement certification is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(c)***
