Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to caught in between hazards/crushing hazards from not performing prevenative maintenance and inspections on automotive lifts as detailed in the manufacturer's information. Maintenance mechanics were exposed to caught-in-between/crushing hazards while operating automotive lifts due to an overall lack of preventative maintenance and regular inspections of the automotive lifts. Among other methods of feasible abatement, all of the following methods would be acceptable: 1) Establish a periodic inspection procedure in accordance with the recommendations of the lift manufacturer to ensure reliability of lift components, per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2008 Automotive Lift Standard, section 5.1; and 2) Establish a periodic maintenance schedule for all automotive lifts per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2008 Automotive Lift Standard, section 6.1.1; and 3) Initiate communication with the lift manufacturer prior to any modification of the lift from its original design, per ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2008 Automotive Lift Standard, section 7. Abatement certification and abatement documentation is required for this violation. The documentation should include written verification of abatement, applicable measurements or monitoring results, and photographs or videos which you believe will be helpful. The abatement certification sheet is enclosed with the citation(s).
