Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential energy from high pressure water: (a) Greensburg Shop, Greensburg, PA: On or about May 6, 2009, modifications were made to a Woma high pressure water-jetting system without written approval from the manufacturer. The employer had removed the manufacturer installed by-pass valve and installed an automatic throttle control. Employees use this machine to perform high pressure water cleaning. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to follow the ASTM, American Society for Testing and Materials Standard Practice for Pressure Water Cleaning and Cutting which requires the manufacturer's written approval for equipment modifications.
