Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational safety and Health Act of 1970: the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: a. On or about March 19, 2009 - at the above addressed jobsite, the employer allowed his employees to operate and lift large steel skeletons using lifting straps placed around the forks of a Square Shooter SS636 Turbo Rough Terrain Forklift when this practice is not recommended and or approved by the manufacturer. The employees were thereby exposed to struck by hazards due to the possibility of the load sliding out of the sling or off the forks. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard, among other means, would be for the contractor to purchase or rent the appropriate attachments, i.e. truss boom or crane hook to replace the existing forks. Either of these two attachments are better suited and approved for this type of work.
