Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, below-the- hook lifting device or jib/bridge crane system fail: a)Truck Repair side of shop, on or about 2/9/10: A five ton spreader beam used for lifting engines had not been inspected. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1.Inspect the lifting device in accordance with ASME B30.20-1993, Section 20-1.3. b)The following overhead hoists did not have the rated load capacity markings on them, the upper limit switches were not working, the air lines were worn and deteriorating and no inspections were conducted: 1.Truck Repair side of shop, on or about 2/9/10: An overhead air hoist #8 had no rated load markings on it, the upper limit switch was not working, the air lines were deteriorating and cracking, and there were no inspections conducted on the hoist. 2.Truck Repair side of shop, on or about 2/9/10: A Coffing one ton overhead hoist attached to jib crane #2 had not been inspected. 3.Trailer Repair, on or about 2/9/10: A 5 ton Reliable crane did not have the pendant control buttons clearly labeled and the upper limit switch was not properly adjusted. 4.Trailer Repair, on or about 2/9/10: A Coffing one ton overhead hoist attached to jib crane #13 had not been inspected. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to: 1.Mark the rated load capacity on the hoist or load block in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993, Section 16-1.1. 2.Adjust/repair the upper limit switch in accordance with ANSI B30.16- 1993, Section 16-1.2.14. 3.Inspect the overhead hoist in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993, Section 16-2 and replace worn and/or deteriorating parts and label the pendant control buttons. c)Truck Repair side of shop, on or about 2/9/10: A jib crane #8 with an air hoist attached had no rated load capacity markings on it. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to: 1.Mark the rated load capacity on the jib crane in accordance with ANSI B30.11-1980, Section 11-1. Abatement certification must be submitted for these items.
