Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK-BY: a)Coil wind roll storage area, on or about 10/14/2009: A metal wall supported jib rail was used to support a 1/2 ton 'KM' hand operated chain hoist was not tested, rated, marked or inspected. Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to: 1.Test, rate, and mark the jib rail to ensure it will withstand the forces generated by the hoist and the rated load. ANSI B30.11.1-1980, Monorails and Underhung Cranes, Section 11.1 Construction and Installation. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the wall supported jib rail and maintain records in accordance with ANSI B30.11.2-1980 Monorail and Underhung Cranes, Section 11-2 Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance. b)Coil wind roll storage area, on or about 10/14/2009: One (1) locally fabricated metal spreader below-the-hook hoisting bar was not tested, rated marked or inspected. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct each of these hazards are to: 1.Test, rate and mark the load capacity of the lifting devices on a tag/plate or equivalent. Section 20-1, ANSI/ASME B30.20-1993, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the lifting device in accordance with Section 20-1, ANSI/ASME B30.20-1993, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices. Abatement certification must be submitted for these items.
