Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard when operating a cardboard trash compactor: a) Where at the time of the inspection the cardboard trash compactor was being run without an interlock switch on the door (gate). Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard includes compliance with the American National Standards Institute, ANSI Z245.2, which requires an operating interlock on door, also an inspection of the equipment to ensure the interlock is functioning, and not permit an employee to operate the equipment unless the interlock and gate enclosure is functioning.
