Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Located within the Baldwin Tower project luffing lattice jib boom erection employees performing multi-leg chain sling boom rigging and attachment operations were exposed to potential struck-by and/or crushing hazards of boom sections becoming unsecured by accidental disengagement of multi-leg chain slings master link from the chain hook. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to follow ANSI B30.9-2003, Operational Practices section 9-1.10.1(f) and Rigging Practices section 9-1.10.4(c), which includes, but not limited to, the following: 1) The components shall be of the proper shape and size to ensure that it is properly seated in the hook or lifting device; 2) The sling shall be hitched in a manner providing for control of the load.ol
