North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards. a) Fan Maintenance Activity in the Sweet Potato Washing and Grading Area - One worker was repairing a fan while standing on a wooden pallet attached to the forks of a powered industrial truck. The forks were elevated approximately 11 feet from the cement floor below. A second worker was standing directly on the forks of a second powered industrial truck located on the outside of this building and on the opposite side of the fan. The forks of this truck were also elevated approximately 11 feet from the cement surface below. Abatement Notice: One feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to provide a manufacturer's approved lifting platform which meets the requirements of ANSI standard B56.1. b)Sizing and Packing Operation - One worker was not provided with a safe working platform and was exposed to the hazard of stepping or falling onto conveyor belts and rollers or to the cement floor below. Abatement Notice: One feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to provide guarded platform(s) from which to perform work.
