Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the improper handling and use of chain saws in that chain saws were utilized above the shoulder level of the saw operators: a)Tree Felling Operation Near Citizens Bank/ 6 West 12th Street Latitude 42.123564, Longitude -80.08235/ Erie, PA: On or about April 18, 2011, Chain saw operator was utilizing a Husqvarna Chain Saw to trim a branch prior to felling the tree. Chain saw operator was utilizing the chain saw at or above head level to trim the branch. Condition potentially exposed the saw operator potential saw kick-back and deep gouging/laceration injuries. Abatement Note: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means to correct the condition include training personnel the proper use of chain saws. Materials that could be utilized to facilitate a training program include the Husqvarna Chain Saw Manual, Husqvarna Publication entitled "How to Work with A Chain Saw", and ANSI B175.1 Safety Requirements for Chain Saws
