Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the following: a.In the" A" frame area, the employer did not label "below the hook" lifting tongs, used to lift lead acid battery cells, with the rated load capacity thus exposing employees to struck-by hazards. b.In the Lead Acid Battery area, the employer did not label "below the hook" lifting tongs with their rated load capacity thus exposing employees to struck-by hazards. Two Coffing half-ton hoists were being used with "below the hook" lifting tongs to lift lead acid battery cells. c.In the Lead Acid Battery area, the employer did not label "below the hook" lifting tongs with their rated load capacity thus exposing employees to struck-by hazards. Two CM Loadstar half-ton hoists were being used with "below the hook" lifting tongs to lift lead acid battery cells. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to affix data plates to the lifting tongs in accordance with ASME Standard B30.20, Section 1.2.ion
