Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards while operating under hung crane, with an unmarked pendant control: (a)Welding Station #2 Area: Employees were operating a 10 ton under hung crane (#C0-3), that was located next to the #2 welding station area. The pendant controller was not marked to indicate the direction of resultant motion when the buttons were depressed, as determined on or about 04/16/09. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow accepted safe practices such as but not limited to; (a) install a new pendant with visible markings onto the control, (b) follow the guidelines set forth in ANSI/ASME B30.11, Monorail and Underhung Cranes.
