Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries in the event of an hydraulic failure while working below a vehicle on an automotive lift without a safety device: (a)Garage Area: The hydraulic automotive lift was not provided with an automatic mechanical device to hold the lift in the fully extended position at rated load capacity while performing work on the underneath side of a vehicle, on or about March 5, 2009. NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install an automatic mechanical device having a safety factor of 3 based on the rated load capacity to hold the lift in the fully extended position at rated load capacity, as specified by section 5.1.10 of the American National Standard (ANSI) B153.1-1974, Safety Requirements for the construction, care, and use of automotive lifts.
