Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards when walking and stepping on roller conveyors: (a)Whirlpool Corporation, 1300 Marion-Agosta Road, Marion, Ohio: On or about June 26, 2009, the employer did not ensure employees were protected from fall hazards when walking or crossing roller conveyors. Employees in various departments, including but not limited to department 171 and 172, stepped over and stepped on roller conveyors while positioning the dryers in order to install parts, correct deficiencies, and test the units for proper operation prior to shipment. Among other methods, a feasible abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B20.1-2009, Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment. Section 6.11.1, Roller and Wheel Conveyors references installing tread plates between the rollers to provide a stable walking and working surface. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of abatement, or other written records.
