Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards from a below-the-hook lifting device. a. Jerl Machine Inc., Perrysburg Ohio: on or about April 2, 2008, the employer failed to ensure employees lifting a piece of bearing block (25 pound 8" X 10" X 3") into a Romi model M 27 combination lathe, machine number 435, used a C-clamp. The C-clamp used to lift the bearing block approximately 6 feet and place it into the machine was unrated and had no product safety labels or data plate. One feasible means of abatement would be to follow ASME B30.20-1999, Below-The-Hook Lifting Devices, Section 20-1.2 Markings and Construction. No additional abatement information is needed for this item.
