Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employees in that employees were exposed to struck by/caught between hazards from roof truss collapse during installation: (a)On or about December 12, 2008, and at times prior thereto, employees had installed 21 common trusses (bottom chord span of 60 feet) without top chord diagonal bracing. (b)On or about December 12, 2008, and at times prior thereto, employees had installed 21 common trusses (bottom chord span of 60 feet) without bottom chord (horizontal) diagonal bracing. (c)On or about December 12, 2008, and at times prior thereto, employees had installed 21 common trusses (bottom chord span of 60 feet) without sufficient top chord lateral bracing. Only one row of metal restraints had been installed on each top chord (sloping side). (d)On or about December 12, 2008, and at times prior thereto, employees had installed 21 common trusses (bottom chord span of 60 feet) without sufficient bottom chord (horizontal) lateral bracing. Only one lateral brace had been placed near the centerline. (e)On or about December 12, 2008, and at times prior thereto, employees had installed 21 common trusses (bottom chord span of 60 feet) without web diagonal bracing. NOTE: Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to follow the Building Component Safety Information BCSI B-1 - Guide for Handling, Installing and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, and BCSI B-2 - Truss Installation & Temporary Restraint/Bracing, issued by the Wood Truss Council of America and the Truss Plate Institute. Bracing may be installed as a permanent part of the structure and/or installed temporarily until structural sheathing has been installed. NOTE: Abatement Certification IS required for this item.
