Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of exposure to hot substances and burns: On or about 01/15/09, the employer did not ensure that sugar "liquor" storage tanks (4-FH-13 & 3-FH-10) located on the upper floors of the Filter House did not overflow, spilling the approx 180-185 deg F liquor. This exposed employees to burns received by being splashed by the hot liquor. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to have the 4-FH-13 tank removed from service and replaced with a closed tank with an adequately sized overflow drain line(s). For 3-FH-10, the employer should install a locking mechanism to secure the top hatch in place to prevent overflow and install an adequately sized drain line from the top of the tank. DISCLAIMERS: 1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
