Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the point of operation: The foot treadle, on the 65 Ton Verson Press Brake #97, was not guarded to prevent accidental actuation. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means to correct these hazards are: (1)Implement the requirements outlined in American National Standards Institute ANSI B11.3-2002 for Machine Tools - Safety Requirements for Power Press Brakes, Section 6.10.3 Unattended actuation of press brake by foot treadle. When provided, a foot treadle of the type that services as an operator control shall be equipped with a means to prevent unattended machine actuation. (2)Provide a protective cover over the treadle bar to prevent unattended machine actuation. (3)Provide a locking pin or locking lever to lock the treadle bar in a fixed position. These locking mechanisms should be designed to prevent unattended machine actuation. The locking mechanism should not allow locking in the operating position. Certification, and documentation/evidence of abatement is required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
