Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by, caught by hazards: (a)Jobsite, 600 Thomas Street, Monroeville, PA: On or about 1/4/08 the trusses associated with the 48' x 60' building collapsed trapping 2 employees who were working below. The trusses were not installed in accordance with BCSI 1-03 in that an adequate number of top chord temporary lateral bracing was not used. The span of the trusses was approximately 49'6" and only had one row of top chord lateral bracing per run side. BCSI 1-03 recommends that top chord temporary lateral bracing be installed every 6' on truss spans of 45-60 feet. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install the trusses in accordance with BCSI 1-03.
