Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that lifting devices are used to lift loads on overhead cranes and the lifting devices do not have marked load ratings, are not inspected, and are used by employees who are not trained in their use. (a) Facility, 685 State Street, Vanport, PA, 15009: On or about 1/30/2008, employees used and worked in the vicinity of sheet lifters, a type of below the hook lifting device, and the sheet lifters were not marked with their load rating, had not been subject to frequent and periodic inspections, and the operators were not trained in the safe use of the sheet lifters. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct this hazard is to: 1.Have the sheet lifters load tested and mark them according. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections on the sheet lifters. 3.Train the operators in the safe operation of the sheet lifters.
