Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from the second floor opening of the hoistway: Location: 787 E 138 Street Bronx NY On or about 8/29/07, a) The doors that led to the hoistway at the second floor level were not interlocked. The hoist could be on a different floor or could be operated while the doors were open. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is: to ensure that interlocks and door locking devices are installed and functioning properly and follow ASME A 17.3 - 1993 Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators. NOTE: The employer is required to submit abatement certification for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
