Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns when using a "shop built" heater: a) Workplace, Roll Building Area - On or about January 3, 2008 an employee building a mill roll contacted the open flame of a "shop built" line heater causing severe burns. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard are for the employer to insure that natural gas appliances are Approved, Listed or constructed on the basis of a sound engineering evaluation per the requirements of Section 9.1 of the 2006 Edition of NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code. The equipment must be safe and suitable for the proposed service and be recommended for the service per the requirements of Section 5.1 of the 1992 Edition of NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code. No abatement certification or documentation required.tion
