Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees in that employees were exposed to struck by/crushing hazards: (a) Auto repair shop: On or about February 18, 2010 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to a struck by and crushing hazard while elevating vehicles on vehicle lifts that were not inspected and maintained. (b) Auto repair shop: On or about February 18, 2010 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to a struck by and crushing hazard while elevating vehicles on vehicle lifts without prior training. (c) Auto repair shop: On or about February 18, 2010 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to a struck by and crushing hazard while elevating vehicles on #1 and #2 Globe, the #3 Weaver lift and #12 Rotary Lift with no locks on the lifts. (d) Auto repair shop: On or about February 18, 2010 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to a struck by and crushing hazard while elevating vehicles on #1 and #2 Globe lifts without the rated capacity marked. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazards noted is to follow the requirements in ANSI/ALI 2008 which include, among other requirements, the following: 1. Institute a preventative maintenance program according to the manufacturer's specifications. 2. Provide training to employees on proper use and care of the lifts. 3. Schedule and complete all periodic and annual inspections.
