Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling: (a) Worksite, 3989 Middle Country Road - An employee working in a Self Propelled Elevating Platform [JLG Scissor Lift], Model # 647093/Serial #O200156554 approximately 9 ft high was exposed to fall hazards as he climbed out of the lift to the floor above; on or about 07/25/09. (b) Worksite, 3989 Middle Country Road - An employee working/standing on the midrail of a Self Propelled Elevating Platform [JLG Scissor Lift], Model # 647093/Serial #O200125251 approximately 9 ft high was exposed to fall hazards; on or about 07/25/09. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard it to: 1.(a) Comply with the ANSI standard A92.6-1990 section 8.10.1 "Personnel Footing" which states: "Personnel shall maintain a firm footing on the platform floor while working thereon." 2.(b) Comply with the ANSI standard A92.6-1990 section 7.6 "Operator Training" which states: "Whenever a user directs or authorizes an individual to operate an aerial platform the user shall ensure that the individual has been trained in accordance with the manufacture's operating and maintenance manual, the user's work instructions, and the requirements listed in Section 8 of this standard before operating the aerial platform." Note: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
