Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: On or about 04/18/2011, at the U.S. Marine Corps New River Air Station, Jacksonville, NC, an employee was exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a dump truck while laying a guide string for the paving machine. Among feasible methods of abatement to corret this hazard are: 1. Hold formal training on the duties of a spotter whereby laborer proximity, standard hand signals and visibility issues are discussed with all employees who direct and work in the area of trucks. 2. Ensure that workers follow procedures that minimize or eliminate pedestrian exposure to hazards from moving vehicles and mobile equipment. 3. Consider the use of electronic signaling devices or sensors to warn equipment operators of the presence of workers in the blind spots of mobile equipment.
