Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of steam burns while reacting to catastrophic releases of steam: Throughout the Iatan Station #1 the employer failed to develop emergency procedures to address large steam releases. Employees were exposed to serious burns while reacting to a catastrophic steam line failure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazardous condition would be to implement operating procedures and training to address the emergency conditions as described in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazard Code 85 - 2007 Edition. Abatement certification is required for this item (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification.
