Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards: Employees were using below-the-hook lifting devices, J-hooks, a spreader bar and lifting lugs, that were manufactured at the facility. The lifting devices were not proof tested, inspected or marked for their rated capacities prior to being put into service. The parts ranged in weighed from several hundred to several thousand pounds. Among other methods, one feasable and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to ensure the below-the-hook lifting devices are proof tested, inspected and marked in accordance with ASME B30.20-2006, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices, Section 20-1.2.1 Marking, Section 20-1.3.1 Inspection, and Section 20-1.3.8.2 Load Test. ***Abatement certification is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(c)***
