Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees were exposed to accidental contact with extremely hot surfaces and fire that is released out of the base of the tilt furnace when performing duties around the furnace and the employer did not provide adequate controls to prevent exposure to the hazard. The south tilt furnace had an opening approximately 1.5 feet from the floor and flames were released at intermittent times, which extended approximately 1.5 feet from the furnace. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: A) Place a flap door over the opening to prevent the release of flames ANSI standard Z241.2 - 1999 Safety Requirements for Melting and Pouring of Metals in the Metalcasting Industry, Section 5.1.2: "Employer. The employer shall be responsible for the installation and maintenance of guards, shields or barriers, and for maintaining the condition, and position of such devices to protect against recognized hazardous conditions. The employer shall be responsible for providing, installing and maintaining any additional guards required to provide protection against recognized hazardous conditions created by the use and/or installation of the equipment.
