Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosive fragmentation hazards: County Rd. 12 & Limestone Rd., Howard, KS 67349 - On or about February 12, 2007 - Employee was exposed to explosive fragmentation hazards from a home-made plastic PVC pipe tube-device being used to distribute compressed air using tire sealer to force the pressure into the tube, which resulted in the explosion of the canister. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: to replace the PVC piping with a type of pipe that is approved for transporting compressed gases in above ground locations such as metal pipe as recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute and ANSI/ASME B31.8-2003 - Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping System Standard. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
