Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that caused or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of potential fire and explosion from ungrounded/static dissipating flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) and liner. Maltodextrin 2,000 pound FIBC was not static dissipating nor properly grounded when dispensed. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 77 Recommended Practice on Static Electricity Chapter 10 Specific Application, 10.1.6 Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC), 10.1.7 Container Linings.
