Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that caused or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of potential fire and explosion from dust collector and pneumatic conveyor that were not designed to minimize damage that would occur in the event of a dust explosion inside the machine. In the coca powder dump room, the dust collector was located inside facility. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBlE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS to comply with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Chapter 61 "Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosion in Agriculture and Food Processing Facilities," 2008 edition; NFPA 69 "Standard on Explosion Prevention System" 2008 edition; NFPA "Standard for the Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosion from the Manufacturing, Processing and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids" 2006 edition, including but no limited to: a) Move dust collector outside of facility or location employees do not work. b) Equip dust collector with deflagrating venting, vented to the outside or designed to withstand the effects of deflagration. c) Install deflagration suppression system and deflagration pressure containment system in accordance with NFPA 69.
