Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Mittal Steel, Coatesville, Electric Melt Shop, D-Furnace - Mittal Steel Corporation did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: the hazards associated with the removal of the Pressure Relief Valves (PRVs) and Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) from each of the furnace's water cooled shell panels. In approximately 1985, these devices were installed by the manufacturer (Korf-Fuchs Systems) when the D-furnace was retro fitted with a water cooled shell and roof. These same type of devices, especially the PRVs, are installed and maintained on electric arc furnaces throughout the industry. One feasible and reasonable means of abatement would be to reinstall and maintain the devices and their related monitoring systems. CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT OF THIS HAZARD IS REQUIRED
