Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall due to the inadequate posting of capacity ratings on elevators: On or about June 17, 2006, and at other times prior thereto, in the Coker Unit at the north end, the employer failed to post the maximum capacity rating inside the car of the deck elevator. The elevator was used by both permanent and contract employees. Among others, one feasible means of abatement would be inform employee passengers of the safe maximum load of the elevator in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ASME A17.1 (2004), "Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators," Section 2.16.3.
