Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of being struck by pieces (shards) of exploding PVC pipe: a.On or about October 11, 2006, the employer utilized PVC pipe to distribute compressed air and the piping was not an approved compressed air line piping system or enclosed in conduit or casing. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to completely enclose the plastic service line in conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration, or install black iron pipe.
