Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employees were exposed to being caught in a moving conveyor belt: a)Sorting conveyor belt areas. The 2 sorting conveyor belt areas were not provided with emergency stop devices for all employees on the conveyors, thereby exposing employees to being caught, dragged, and crushed by the moving conveyor belts, and then being crushed and bailed in the gatherer, on or about 9/7/06. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD, AMONG OTHERS, TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: to comply with ASME/ANSI B20.1-2003, section 5.11.2(c) and provide permanently installed pull cords or similar stop controllers at points where employees are normally stationed. NOTE: THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS ITEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH 29 CFR 1903.19NCE
