Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPOPPROC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to inhalation hazards of anhydrous ammonia leaks from valves on pressure vessels: (A)Anhydrous Ammonia Storage and Filling Station: On or about October 9, 2007 and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to unknown concentrations of anhydrous ammonia leaking from valves on the 21,000 gallon pressurized storage tank that had not been repaired. (B)Mobile Anhydrous Ammonia Transportation Equipment: On or about October 5, 2007, employees were exposed to unknown concentrations of anhydrous ammonia leaking from valves on the bandicator that had not been repaired. ABATEMENT NOTE: Amongst other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to adhere to the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) established by The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. Paragraph RB- 6540, Liquid Ammonia Vessels, requires any leak to be thoroughly investigated and the necessary corrective action initiated. In addition, if valves or fittings are in place, check to ensure that these are complete and functional. Note: Abatement certification and documentation required for this item.
