Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Glenwood Water Distribution Improvement Project PVC 10: diameter, 11/20, SDR-21 pipe was used to transport compressed air on or about May 3, 2006. A section of the pipe exploded, causing exposure to the hazard of blunt force trauma injuries. Feasible and useful methods of abatement, among others would be: a) Prohibit the use of compressed air to perform lead tests on PVC pipelines. b) Utilize the services of a licensed or specialized leak detection contractor capable of safely locating leaks without the use of compressed air. c) Instruct employees on the proper precautions to be utilized when working on or in proximity to pressurized PVC pipes.
