Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards, that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to being struck by unsecured loads from company-fabricated lifting devices which have failed as a result of over-loading: On or about September 11, 2006, employees of Metal Improvement Company, LLC were using company-fabricated lifting devices to lift parts such as R&W disks. The lifts were not load-rated nor were they tested to ensure that they were capable of safely lifting the load. A feasible form of abatement would be to comply with ANSI Standard, ASME B 30.20 1996, Below-The-Hook Lifting Devices. Abatement certification is required of this item in accordance with 20 CFR 1903.19(c).
