Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being pulled into and crushed by revolving equipment parts. a) The employer violated this obligation on or about February 15, 2006, and in times prior thereto, at this site, when employees cleaned the moving auger blades on a GOMACO 2800 paver. b) When employees cleaned the moving auger blades on a GOMACO PC- 2600 placer/spreader machine. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means to abate this hazard include, but are not limited to: (1) when cleaning unguarded moving parts, following the recommendations set out in the manufacturer's safety manual; (2) training affected employees on these cleaning procedures; and (3) posting signs on the equipment to alert employees who clean the equipment that they must stay a specified distance, determined to be safe and consistent with the manufacturer's safety manual, from unguarded moving parts.
