Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employees were exposed to being struck by and/or caught in a moving part of the conveyor belt: a)Conveyor Belt Sorting Line: Employees reaching in an removing undesirable materials through the method of hand-sorting were exposed to the hazard of being struck by and caught in a protruding damaged section of metal lacing while the conveyor belt on or about 5/10/07. b)Conveyor Belt Sorting Line: Employees reaching in an removing undesirable materials through the method of hand-sorting were exposed to the hazard of being caught by ingoing nip points formed between conveyor rollers and the main frame of the conveyor due to large portions of the conveyor belt having been removed on or about 5/10/07. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among other, to correct this hazard is the following: 1.Repair and maintain the conveyor belt system in compliance with ASME/ANSI B20.1-2003 - Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment. NOTE: In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
