Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Location: warehouse On or about: 1/18/06 a) While installing storage racks and stocking/retrieving materials from storage racks, employees were riding on the forks and on wooden pallets that were placed on the forks. The pallets were not secured to the forks. The employees, exposed to fall distances of up to 15'3", were not provided with fall protection. AMONG OTHER METHODS ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: (1) follow the safety procedures in American Society of Mechanical Engineers B56.1-2000, Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks, section 4.17 Elevating Personnel, including securing the platform to the forks and providing an acceptable means of fall protection. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement for this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
