Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to Hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas: (a)ClO2 process area: On April 25, 2006 and at times prior the employer exposed employees to the hazard of hydrogen sulfide when working in the bleach plant and the ClO2 process area due to potential of ClO2 release into the process sewer from the ClO2 tank farm surface drains. The process sewer contains sulfide wastes which could be mixed with acid or acidic materials and release hydrogen sulfide gas. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to abate this hazard would be to connect the ClO2 tank farm surface drains to the existing acid sump system to prevent any acidic material from reaching the plant process sewer.
