Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards from falling loads due to hoist hooks not being equipped with safety latches: a.Elyria Foundry Co. located in Elyria, Ohio: On or about May 18, 2007, the employer did not ensure the jib hoist which suspends the impact gun in the East Cleaning Department was equipped with a hook safety latch. b.Elyria Foundry Co. located in Elyria, Ohio: On or about May 18, 2007, the employer did not ensure the jib hoist which places and removes hanger racks from the spinner hanger located in the West Cleaning Department was equipped with a hook safety latch. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to ensure the hoist hooks are equipped with safety latches according to AMSE B30.16-2003 "Overhead Hoists (Underhung)". In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
