Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the struck by and crushing hazards while working with unsecured/unstable steel beams while practicing for the set up of a cooling tower's steel support structure: On or about 05/13/06, at the company's yard, two employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck/crushed-by from unsecured/unstable steel beams while practicing the assembling and disassembling a steel cooling tower to be erected at a later date. Among other methods of abatement, one feasible and useful method to correct the hazard would be for the employer to institute a policy with a strict enforcement mechanism that would secure all loads before employees are allowed to approach them. PLEASE NOTE: DOCUMENTATION AND CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
