Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, monorail and/or below-the-hook lifting devices fail, not function properly or should the load slip off the hook for lack of safety latches: a)On or about 12/18/06: Four below-the-hook lifting devices used for lifting engines and transmissions from automobiles did not have rated load capacity markings. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Mark the rated load of the lifting device on the device in accordance with ASME B30.20-1993, Section 20-1.2.1. b)On or about 12/18/06: Three Coffing one ton hoists had broken or missing safety latches on the lifting hooks. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Repair or install new safety latches on the lifting hooks in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993, Section 16-1.2.9. c)On or about 12/18/06: No inspections were conducted on four Coffing one ton hoists. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to: Inspect the overhead hoist in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993,Section 16- 2.1. d)On or about 12/18/06: Three monorails supporting the Coffing one ton hoists had no rated load capacity markings. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to: Mark the rated load on the main structure in accordance with ANSI B30.11- 1980, Section 11-1.1.2.
