Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck-by the load should the hoist or monorail fail: a)Main Shop Area, on or about 12/22/05: Three overhead hoists used for lifting equipment including but not limited to; air conditioning units. 1)Hoists were not being inspected on a frequent and periodic basis. 2)Monorail systems were not labeled with the load capacity. 3)Safety clips on hooks were missing. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method of abatement is to: 1). Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the electric hoist for wear, deterioration and malfunction in accordance with ASME B30.16-1993, section 20- 1.3 and make repairs accordingly. 2). Mark the rated load capacity on the monorail in accordance with ASME B30.11-1980, section 11.1.1. 3). Install new safety latches on the lifting hooks in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993, section 16-1.2.9. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
