Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling or collapsing trusses: a) On or about 6/23/05, at Kidney Road, Mansfield, New York; employees were caught in a truss collapse due to lack of temporary web member diagonal bracing and removal of temporary top chord bracing during installation. b) On or about 6/23/05, at Kidney Road, Mansfield, New York; employees were caught in a truss collapse when construction loads in excess of the designed live load were placed on top of the structure. c) On or about 6/23/05, at Kidney Road, Mansfield, New York; while placing trusses that were 70 feet 9 inches long, the employer did not consult with a Professional Engineer for the design of temporary bracing. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION IS: Install trusses in accordance with BCSI-1-03, "Guide to Good Practice For Handling, Installing, and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses" and/or the BCSI-B2 Summary Sheet "Truss Installation and Temporary Bracing" and/or BCSI-B4 "Construction Loading" all provided by the Wood Truss Council of America and the Truss Plate Institute. ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREDATION
