Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of being struck by: (a)Highway 27 South - During the period April 1-21, 2006 two employees were exposed to being struck by motor vehicles while riding on a utility trailer that had defective brake and turn signal lights. The utility trailer was not coupled to the towing vehicle by means of a safety chains, cables, or equivalent devices in addition to the regular trailer hitch or coupling. (b)Highway 27 South - During the period April 1-21, 2006 two employees riding on utility trailer were exposed to being struck by traffic signs that were being transported on the utility trailer that were not secured to prevent displacement. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF ABATEMENT TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO NOT ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO RIDE ON UTILITY TRAILERS, SECURE LOADS TO PREVENT DISPLACEMENT, REPAIR BRAKE AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS AND INSTALL AND USE HITCH SAFETY CHAINS.
